Exploring the Live Gene of Woolly Mammoth Gives Some Answers

Though there is no scientist on planet who managed to create live woolly mammoth but some researchers have managed to recreate its gene. During prehistoric period, these giant hairy elephant like creatures used to stay around the Arctic tundra. Furry coats and subcutaneous fats are the most striking features of this animal. The researchers tried to study the development of such parts and its relation with the evolution, evolutionary biologist Vincent Lynch informed about the study. He works at the University Of Chicago, which was also the participating institution in the research.
Lynch said that they explored which factors create woolly mammoth.  The detailed report is published in the Call Reports, a science journal. The laboratory of the University for the First Time analyzed the sample of extinct animal and found out the genetic foundation of evolution. Around 10,000 years ago, Woolly Mammoths went extinct from the planet. The gene of this animal was created with collaboration of Penn State University’s Webb Miller along with Stephan Schuster from Nanyang Technological University based in Singapore.
Combinations of more than 3 billion DNA bases were used to create the genetic footprint of the animal. All three researchers needed different things about the creature to complete their research and this brought them together for the joint project. Three Asian elephants’ DNA samples were compared with the mammoth genomes and looks like there are massive 1.4 million differences between both species. The study is going to give us better understanding of evolution and DNA adaptations.
